It’s one of the worst nightmares of any parent, and that includes dog parents. To lose your children anywhere is already terrifying, imagine losing them overseas. That is what Floris Van Essen and his wife felt when their precious pup went missing. Van Essen and his wife does not have any children, but they treat their dogs as their children, just like any other dog parent.

The dog in this story is Gale, she is a purebred American Staffordshire terrier who is winning dog show competitions left and right. They were about to head home to Amsterdam after joining a competition in Kentucky. While being loaded, KLM staff noticed that Gale was no longer in her crate. A huge problem, given the fact that they are in an airport.

It’s like finding a needle in a haystack. Finding a dog, who keeps on moving around the airport. A lot of people have reported seeing Gale, from passengers inside the terminals to pilots taxiing around the airport. The space that the search team needed to cover was intimidating, and the subject they need to recover keeps on moving — a real uphill battle.

Van Essen and his wife were already in Amsterdam, while Gale was still in Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, roaming around, just like the curious dog that she is. The airport staff set up traps and used chicken from a nearby restaurant to lure the dog in. Once they found her, the airport staff reported it took them 20 minutes before they could really get a hold of her.

Fortunately, Gale wasn’t stubborn enough to run away again. Remember, she is a show dog, after all. The airport staff’s search has ended after covering 4600 acres around the airport. The chicken bait was very effective in reeling her in. She was flown to Amsterdam courtesy of KLM and the Van Essen’s couldn’t be more thankful.
